There are a number of nurse aide training programs located in hospitals, health care establishments, nursing facilities and places of education throughout the state. You must finish one of these accredited and approved programs and then pass the certifying exam to be listed on the Montana Nurse Aide Registry.  This will allow you to acquire work as a certified nursing assistant.

CNA training in Montana programs are governed by state and federal restrictions, and within this state, these programs have to include no less than 75 teaching hours broken down into 50 hours of instructional classroom learning and 25 hours of hands on learning in a clinical environment. During the hands on learning portion, you will be working under the supervision of a registered nurse which has been licensed and certified to give instruction in the state of Montana. Prior to enrolling in the course, you must be found eligible by providing legitimate identification, pass health test checks and a criminal background investigation.

When the CNA Classes are done, you will need to successfully pass the State Competency Evaluation Program. In order to do this, you must be deemed eligible by taking skills assessment testing conducted by the nurse who taught your clinical portion of the training course. This evaluation, which is also known as the  Montana Nurse Aide Skills Competency Check List, is mandatory and you must meet all required elements on this list before you can take the exam.

The first part of the examination will consist of five or six physical skills tasks that you learned in your clinical training. If you pass this portion, you will go on to take the multiple choice and reading comprehension sections of the licensing exam. Make sure to show up a bit early on testing day to calm your nerves, and to allow ample time for you to go through the check-in process. Also, check out our Scenario Training section that discusses several essential skills of CNA’s and practice tests designed to  help you pass the exam with ease.
